The WFI was lucky enough to welcome 5 all-star high school debate coaches to talk to us about debating on the national circuit. Panelists included: Mike Bausch (Kent Denver, Denver, CO), Maggie Berthiaume (Woodward Academy, College Park, GA), Lauren Ivey (Alpharetta High School, Alpharetta, GA), Tim Mahoney, (St. Mark's School of Texas, Dallas, TX), and Mike Shackleford (Rowland Hall, SLC, UT). We're happy to be able to share a recording of that panel with you all here. The bios of our panelists can be found below the fold. Mike Bausch is the Director of Debate at the Kent Denver School, in Denver, CO. Last year, Mike's team pulled off a hat trick and won the Colorado State Championship in policy for the third-straight year. This year Mike coached his team to the semi-finals of the Tournament of Champions. Mike is also a proud alumni of the University of Wyoming, where he reached the elimination rounds of the National Debate Tournament.
Maggie Berthiaume is the director of the Woodward Debate Team. She has coached teams to the elimination rounds of every major national tournament. As a debater for Dartmouth College, Maggie reached the semi-finals of CEDA nationals. In addition to her two first round at-large bids to the NDT, Maggie was also a three time NDT elimination round participant. She has been a board member of the National Debate Coaches' Association and was the 2016 Georgia debate coach of the year. Lauren Ivey is the Director of Debate at Alpharetta High School in Alpharetta, Georgia. Lauren started debate as a novice at Emory University, where she debated for four years. Lauren then worked as a graduate assistant debate coach for Vanderbilt University before accepting her current position seven years ago. She was the 2018 recipient of the Rising Star Award from the NDCA, awarded to an outstanding coach who is early in their debate coaching career. She currently serves as the Director of Communications for the Georgia Forensics Coaches Association. Lauren has also previously lead summer debate workshops at Emory University, Samford University, and Michigan State University. Lauren has coached many teams to late elimination rounds, including the finals of the 2019 Alta tournament. Tim Mahoney is the Director of Debate at St. Mark's School of Texas. As a college debater, Tim advanced to the final round of 10 tournaments, winning seven of them. As a college coach his teams reached the elimination rounds at 9 consecutive CEDA National tournaments, and he qualified teams for the NDT every year. In his last year of college coaching, his top team was in the quarter finals of both the NDT and CEDA Nationals. His St. Mark’s teams have won or reached the final round of every major high school tournament including, Greenhill, Glenbrooks, Harvard, Berkeley, Westminster, the TOC, NSDA, Emory, and the NDCA National Championship. Mike Shackelford is the Director of Debate for Rowland Hall, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Mike coaches an incredibly successful debate team. In 2020 alone, Rowland Hall students were TOC octo-finalists, awarded 10th speaker at the TOC, and Rowland Hall qualified more teams to nationals than any other school. Mike has also achieved numerous awards, including 2019 Utah High School Activities Association Speech Educator of the Year, 2017-2018 NSDA State Educator of the Year for Utah, 2016 National District Chair of the Year for his leadership in the NSDA, and 2014 Utah Debate Coaches Association Policy Debate Coach of the Year.
