Author: Matt Liu, University of Wyoming Director of Debate
The January/February 2020 LD topic is: Resolved: States ought to eliminate their nuclear arsenals. This is an excellent topic with a wealth of literature on both sides. At early-bird national circuit tournaments like CPS and Blake the most popular affs were: whole rez (global disarm) and India-Pakistan. North Korea was also read (sometimes coupled with South Korea, likely to avoid "T-States = plural"). Iran will likely be a popular aff as well (perhaps coupled with Israel). Some outlier affs focused on particular weapon systems, like TNWs in Europe. I suspect K teams will gravitate to Israel affs and affs about the effects of nuclear testing on indigenous people (settler colonialism). Having been at the CPS tournament myself, I have seven observations on the topic:

Welcome to Wyoming Debate Roundup!
Wyoming Debate Roundup is dedicated to providing quality debate content to Wyoming high school debaters. WDR is exclusively targeted to Wyoming high school debaters. We’re a resource for Wyoming debaters by Wyoming debate coaches. We’ll focus on both topic analysis and developing advanced debate skills, whether in policy, Lincoln-Douglas, or Public Forum. Wyoming Debate Roundup is not a website where you can buy briefs. First, all of our content is free. Second, while we may occasionally post cards, we’ll do so to analyze popular arguments or provide examples of high quality evidence. We’re not in the business of cutting cards for you, we believe the #1 key to success is you doing your own original research. What to expect. Over the next couple of weeks, our opening posts will address subjects like topic analysis (policy, LD and PF-- including thoughts on how to approach the new LD and PF topics strategically and how to debate against popular policy affs) and skills development (getting better at cross-x, how to get better speaks, advancing your understanding of counterplan theory). You should also keep an eye out for guest posts, breakout features, and live events. Our guest posts will feature thoughts on debate from Wyoming “Hall of Fame” alumni, as well as top-tier college debaters and coaches from across the country. Our breakout features will address advanced topics and national circuit trends. Not everyone wants to compete nationally-- and that’s okay! However, we want to make sure any Wyoming debater that wants to knows how to beat any debater, anywhere. That means knowing what arguments are popular on the national circuit, and how to beat them. Part of the mission of Wyoming Debate Roundup is to enable you to be competitive on the national circuit – if that’s your goal. Last, we’ll have some live events. These events will give you access to University of Wyoming coaches and debaters in real time, creating opportunities for you to ask us direct questions about debate and get real-time answers. In the meantime, feel free to email [email protected] to ask us to address specific topics (how to do specific skills well, questions about arguments/topics, etc). Your questions can help direct us to addressing topics that are important to you, the Wyoming high school debate community. Go Pokes! |
